Secret Feature: Best on the Board

March 22, 2008 — It’s the 21st round. By now, you’ve got an eyeball on Barry Bonds, Curt Schilling and Kerry Wood, because you’re desperate enough to consider anyone who might have an impact late in the season for your team. The new guy in the league takes Biggio with his next pick, and everyone chuckles. Now, you’re on the clock.

Who do you pick?

If you’re willing to take some time and keep up with the picks in your draft, MOTY can show you the hidden gems and give you some insight into the best players left on the board. All it takes is a little roster management.

Simply go into “My Rosters” and create a new roster for your draft. Then, go into the 2008 projections. Select the new roster you created in the MOTY Scope, and apply the filter.

Sure, the projections now look barer than the Rays’ hopes for a Series title. But we’re not done yet, and this is where the “secret feature” comes in.

Up in your browser’s address bar, the URL looks something like this:

.../projections/2008mlb/800/all/...

Yours will be slightly different — the 800 will be a different number. It’s this part we need to change. Add an exclamation point so it looks something like this:

.../projections/2008mlb/!800/all/...

By adding an exclamation point before the roster number (which is what that 800 is), you actually get everyone who is not on the selected roster. And by adding players to that roster, you can pull them “off the board” so you can see who’s left.

The rest of the MOTY Scope is still at your command. You can look for that high-RBI producer with at least 10 stolen bases. Or for that sub-4 ERA closer with fewer than 20 walks. By taking the extra few seconds per pick to clear the board, you can pick the best of what’s left using all of the tools MOTY gives you.

This works for the 2007 weeklies, too. So if you want to use last year’s stats as an additional guide, MOTY will help you with that. You can even leave the projections in one window and the weeklies in another, and use both together to make this draft the best one yet.

One last note: If you can manage to keep this list up-to-date throughout the season, you can look at the weeklies and find the top free agents in your league by the same method. It might take some time to manage, but in the long run, it can help you get the jump on the rest of your league when you need it most.
